Sita Kotuwa

Sita's fortress in the Ramayana. A forest monastery to the archaeologists. Beautiful either way.

Pilgrims on the Ramayana trail know this as the place Ravana held Sita. What you find is a quiet descent of two kilometres through forest to limestone caves, a stream, and the foundations of a monastery older than most of Europe's churches.

Free to enter, rarely busy, and a good morning if the parks feel like too much driving.
