Danigala, the Alien Rock
A perfect ring of bare rock above the jungle, with a two-thousand-year-old cave at the top.
From the air it looks like something landed: a flat-topped inselberg with a circular rim of bare rock and a bowl of grass in the middle. The locals call it the alien mountain. The archaeologists call it a second-century-BC monastery.
We leave in the dark, collect the village guide and the monk's permission, and climb for an hour. On top there are Brahmi inscriptions, a wind you can lean on, and the whole of the dry zone laid out below.
